Quarterbacks Who Run
Since 1970, there have been three quarterbacks who have led their team in rushing during a season. This is an unusual occurrence and depends on a number of factors including: having a quarterback who runs well, lacking a solid running back who would normally lead the team in rushing, and having a coach who will call running plays for the quarterback.
Who’s done it then?
Bobby Douglass - 1972 Chicago Bears
Ran for 968 yards on 141 carries (6.9 yard average) and scored 8 touchdowns.
Donovan McNabb - 2000 Philadelphia Eagles
Ran for 629 yards on 86 carries (7.3 yard average) and scored 6 touchdowns.
But, the king of this stat is definitely:
Randall Cunningham - 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990 Philadelphia Eagles
For four consecutive years, Randall Cunningham led his team in rushing from the quarterback position. Running for 505 yards on 76 carries with 3 touchdowns in 1987, 624 yards on 93 carries with 6 touchdowns in 1988, 621 yards on 104 carries with 4 touchdowns in 1989, and 942 yards on 118 carries with 5 touchdowns in 1990.
