1. A4 Size White Paper

Firstly, get an A4 size white paper. They are easy to get in bookstores and manga bookshops. You can either get a drawing block which if you can remember drawing as a kid during school days or pieces of paper packaged together.

Although Japanese started out drawing on card boards, you do not need to start that way since paper is available in abundance. I suggest having at least 4-5 drawing blocks of A4 size white paper.

2. Markers, Pencils, Poster Colors And Rulers

This are the other set of essential tools you need to have.

For markers, I recommend Pilot Drawing Pens with the tip thickness of about 0.2mm. Though there are other markers, this is what I used frequently as they are always available and hence easier to obtain from my local bookstores be it in towns or cities.

But do not draw with markers right away. Instead trace them after you have done pencil sketches.

For pencils, I highly recommend mechanical ones. Though they cost more with separate supplies of pencil leads, they are well worth the price as conventional pencils and sharpeners may not always complement each other in creating quality drawings.

To add color to your drawings, get both colored pencils and poster colors if you have to with filler trays, thin and thick brushes.

For rulers, get both short and long ones. The short is for drawing smaller objects like swords, rifles, knives, guitars, guns and boxes while the long is for designing ships, robots, cars and battlecruisers.

3. DVD, Comic And Magazines

Although those costs money, they are still the essential tools you need to create a great story with great drawings.

Unless you are a creative storyteller and artiste by nature, you need an abundant collection of manga dvds, comics and magazines for both inspiration and creating a mental mindmap in remembering the manga characters’ most common features, expressions and characteristics.

Such as their big eyes, colourful hair, different forms and moods etc.

4. Create Your Story

Begin by writing your story.

I do not know about you but I usually get a collection of ideas after watching numerous manga shows and reading comics. Such as Mobile Suit Gundam, Macross, Robotech. I started off with 1 article but as my ideas expanded, I created more articles which ultimately formed into a booklet and then a book with each article as its chapter.

At this point, do not think of drawing just yet. Just think of how to write your story and make it better from there.

5. Sketch All Characters On Each Page

Once you have your story in place, try sketching all your story characters on each separate page.

At the same time refer back to your comics and graphic magazines for reference and remembering better without copying. The first page should be the character standing and in normal mode while the next should be their variety of different expressions based on their moods.

Begin by drawing basic shapes like circles and oval shapes for their heads and bodies before further adding hair, faces and clothes they wear. This should be for humans and animals.

For weapons and machines, use squares, rectangles and triangles as starting points.

Doing all these will take about 1-2 weeks to fine tune everything based on experience and depending on number of characters you have in your story.

6. Scan And Photocopying All Your Drawings

To avoid your drawings from getting lost or spoilt, make multiple scans and photocopies of all your drawings through your PC and printed paper so that you do not have to draw everything from scratch and save a lot of time as well.

7. Trace And Color Your Drawings

Doing both of these will take about 3-4 weeks as you not only have to trace over pencil sketches but color your drawings with different tones of light and shadow.

8. Binding

Once you are done with everything, bind all your works.

Relax for a day. Then go back to your works and see if there are improvements needed to be made.

Taking a short break from my usual routine during the day I stumbled upon Julia Valenskays’s website and decided to read two of her One-Cup Stories entitled Everlasting Love and The Flight. Never can I say have two short stories that took all of minutes to read had such a profound effect on me.

Each word of Julia Valenskaya’s short stories engaged me each step of the way. These simple short stories are a must read for people who enjoy a brief break from reality from time-to-time. Her two stories Everlasting Love and The Flight are two stories from her series of One-Cup Stories, Sentimental Collection. If these two stories are any indication of what Julia’s other short love stories are like, I can almost guarantee that people will enjoy reading them as much as I enjoyed reading these two stories.

The first story I read was Everlasting Love. This story is based in nature and is all about love. The story takes place on a very scenic beach. What I liked most about Everlasting Love is that it is provocative but in a very innocent way. While reading the story, I found myself feeling as though I was right on the shore’s edge with waves breaking at my feet.

Not too many authors have the ability to captivate the reader’s mind like Julia. I must say I was extremely impressed with her prose. Julia does a wonderful job when it comes to engaging the reader. Everlasting Love grabbed hold of me and didn’t let go. It is with rare occasion that a short story that takes two minutes to read can have me at the edge of my seat wanting more.

The second story I read in Julia’s One-Cup Stories series was The Flight. I was delightfully surprised that I could be so amused and engaged by a story about two leaves. Julia’s writing style made me feel as though I was one with nature while reading this beautiful short romantic love story. This story like Everlasting Love had me wanting more.

I am happy that I came across Julia’s One-Cup Stories. It is not every day that I can come across a website that offers anything of true value, but now I can say that I have. Julia Valenskaya’s One-Cup stories is food for the soul. The stories were very stirring and uplifting. Both stories made my imagination soar to new heights. As it turns out, Julia’s One-Cup Stories are quite addicting. I don’t see how it is possible that people can just stop at one cup, but that’s a really good thing if you are looking for a brief break from your daily routine. Even if you just have one cup, I almost guarantee that you will feel brand new after reading her amazing short love stories.

However, although the reviews of Mr. Bartholomew’s square foot gardening plan are typically very positive, there are still a fair number of critical reviews, making the overall consensus a bit scattered. So, since many of my website visitors are very interested in gardening in the most efficient way possible, it seemed only reasonable to review the “All New Square Foot Gardening” book for those who might be considering purchasing it.

Square Foot Gardening by Mel Bartholomew

In his YouTube video promoting the book Mr. Bartholomew introduces his new book and intros some of the changes between the old version and this new edition. Quite frankly, although the “square foot gardening” method is a useful one, Mr. Bartholomew is not really the “inventor” of the method as he suggests in the video, since many people were using similar methods of gardening long before his first book came along.

So, What Do I Think of the Book?

Well, this book appears to be an attempt at “simplifying” the square foot gardening approach for less experienced gardeners. The previous book was more detailed and gave more background info. This newest book is less detailed and tries to simplify the explanation of the method for “newbies”.

Either way, both books are useful and will definitely help you grow a lot of produce from a very small space compared to more traditional methods. However, before buying, there are probably a few things you should keep in mind:

New Square Foot Gardening Soil Mix

Since the square foot gardening method relies on “raised beds”, you have to fill those beds will some sort of growing medium. In the previous book, the recommended square foot gardening soil mix was more complex than what Mr. Bartholomew currently recommends in the new book, but I’m not sure if I’m a firm believer that either soil mix was entirely what you should be looking for.

The current recommendation creates a soil that can easily become “too hot” for good plant growth, which is not a good thing. In addition, one of the three components that is recommended to blend this new growing medium can be pretty tough to find. Lastly, many readers have been frustrated by how costly it can be to create this “perfect soil” for their new square foot gardening beds.

In contrast, the previous soil mix recommendations were a somewhat better option but did not hold moisture very well. On the one hand, that “feature” helped to avoid over-watering of your plants. But, it also meant that you had to water very frequently to make sure plants did not become dehydrated. I’ll let you decide how big of a plus or minus that is.

Large Plants May Not Work Well

If you’re going to be growing smaller plants and/or plants that don’t typically “spread out” alot (like Watermelon), the square foot gardening layout is great. However, for larger plants, you’ll really want to “spread things out” a bit more to allow a little breathing room between plants.

Moreover, for “spreading” plants, using the square foot gardening plan can be a bit tedious, since you have to grow UP rather than OUT. In other words, trellises and such would likely be necessary for the plants/vines to “climb” and plants that grow larger produce (like watermelons) may have trouble with such a scenario, unless you choose hybrids that grow smaller fruit/veggies.

Despite Drawbacks Sq. Ft. Gardening Gets 4/5

I think the method is great, and Mel Bartholomew has put a lot of time and effort into helping people implement the method in a way that is efficient and productive. That being said, I can’t give either book 5 stars simply because I don’t believe that the recommended soil mixes are going to be your best or your most economical bet.
